SIU takes game one vs. UE in extra innings, 4-3

Carbondale, Il. … Doug Shields' squeeze bunt-and Evansville's resulting error-with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave SIU a 4-3 win over Evansville at Abe Martin Field. The scheduled seven inning game went to extras when Southern scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Saluki OF Chuck Verschoore's 24 game hitting streak came to an end when he went 0 for 3 with an RBI. It is the second longest hitting streak in Saluki history. Bert Newman hit safely in 22 consecutive games in 1974.
