[Baseball] Baseball Drops Two with William Penn

Doane Baseball closed out their four-game series with William Penn on Sunday, dropping a pair of games, 13-11 and 8-7. The Tigers were bitten in the 5th inning of both games as the Statesmen scored a combined 11 runs in that inning.In the 2nd inning of game one, Doane pushed eight runs across the plate behind eight hits. Bob Mercier (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) led off the inning with his first collegiate home run, an opposite field shot. Aaron Mason (SR/Omaha, Neb.) had a bases clearing, three-run double in the frame while Mercier capped the scoring with a RBI-double in the inning.William Penn battled back with a run in the 4th inning and six in the 5th inning. WPU had one hit in the 5th inning but used six walks and two hit batters to propel their big inning. Doane regained the lead in the bottom of the 5th with three runs on four hits.The Statesmen scored a run in the 6th inning and three in the 7th to close out the scoring in the game.Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) led the bats with three of the team's 14 hits. He scored a run and drove in one. Mercier, Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.), and Max McGuire (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) had two hits apiece. Mason led the team with three runs batted in while Theiler and Tanner Black (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) scored two runs apiece.Kellan Voggesser (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) drew the start and went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs with seven strikeouts. Brady McMurray (SR/Odell, Neb.) took the loss (1-1), allowing three runs in 0.2 innings.In the nightcap, William Penn struck first with three runs in the top of the 1st. Doane answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with two runs in the 4th. The Statesmen didn't allow the Tigers to hold the lead for long as they scored five runs in the 5th inning to take the lead back. Doane scored two in the 5th and one in the 7th to close out the scoring.Doane finished the game with seven hits, two from Theiler. It marked his third straight multi-hit game as he drove in two runs with a home run in the 4th inning. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.) drove in a pair of runs with a two-run home run in the 1st inning. Brett Meyer (FR/Seward, Neb.) added a two-run double for his first collegiate hit.Sam Hewitt drew the emergency start after Doane used seven pitchers in the opener which he closed out and allowed three runs in 0.1 innings. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) took the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) threw the final 2.1 innings, striking out three.The Tigers return to the diamond on Saturday, February 22, with a trip to Oklahoma to take on No. 3 Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). The Tigers will play a four-game series with the Drovers.
