[Baseball] Baseball Game Ends in Tie; First Since 1914

Doane Baseball hosted Peru State on Thursday afternoon in Crete, playing a doubleheader. The teams played a pair tight game with the Bobcats taking game one, 7-6. The second game would be halted due to darkness in the 8th inning, ending the game in an 8-8 tie. The last tie in Doane baseball history, based on records available, was in 1914 when the Tigers tied Nebraska Wesleyan 4-4. The game was stopped that year so that Doane could catch the train back to Crete. Game OnePeru State led early and then rallied late to take the opening game. The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the top of the 3rd inning. Three of the Peru State runs came as the batters reached on either a walk or hit by pitch.Doane's first run of the game came in the 2nd inning as Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) delivered a two-out single to plate Aaron Mason (SR/Omaha, Neb.). Mason opened the inning with a leadoff walk. In the 3rd inning, the Tigers came back to take the lead with five runs. Talon Little (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) scored Tanner Black (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) on a fielder's choice for the first run. Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) drove in two runs with a two-out double to tie the game. Doane took the lead as Bob Mercier (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) followed with a home run to go in front,6-4.Peru State came back in the 5th inning with two unearned runs to tie the game. The Bobcats regained the lead in the 6th inning as a leadoff walk came around to score without a hit. Peru State was able to shut the door on the Tigers to close out the game.Doane finished with seven hits in the contest, two from Mercier. Mason led the way with two runs scored while Nakamoto and Mercier drove in two runs apiece.Nathan Stark (JR/Medicine Hat, Alberta) started for the Tigers, allowing four runs on three hits in 3.0 innings. Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.) allowed two unearned runs in 2.0 innings of work. Patrick Mortensen (SO/Center, Colo.) allowed one run in 1.0 inning and Jackson Stensgard (SO/Maricopa, Ariz.) threw a scoreless inning. Game TwoPeru State jumped out early again in the second game only to have Doane rally to take the lead. The Bobcats battled back to tie the game before it was called.In the 1st inning, Peru State scored three runs on three hits, capped by a two-run home run. They added two runs in the 2nd inning on three hits to take a 5-0 lead.The Tigers battled back in the 4th inning and pushed seven runs across the plate to take a 7-5 lead. Mercier drove in the first run of the frame with a RBI-single. Tucker Catlett (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) followed with a RBI-single. A wild pitch with the bases loaded pulled the Tigers within two runs. Doane was able to load the bases once again with no outs as the first six batters of the inning reached base safely. Peru State's pitcher, Devin Adams, was able to settle in and record back-to-back strikeouts but was unable to escape the inning with the lead as Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.) hit a grand slam home run to give Doane the lead. It was the third grand slam hit by a Tiger batter this year.The Bobcats were able to get a run back in the 6th with Doane coming back in the bottom of the inning to regain their two-run lead. Theiler had a RBI-double to drive in his fifth run of the game.Peru State scored two runs in the 7th to extend the game as a walk and hit batter came around to score without a hit in the inning.Doane finished the game with six hits, two from Theiler. Eight different players scored a run for Doane. Kellan Voggesser (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) started for Doane, going 2.0 innings. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.), Staley Gilmore (SR/Bellingham, Wash.), and Hyunjun Chung (SO/Seoul, South Korea) each threw a scoreless frame. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) and Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) threw a combined 2.0 innings, allowing three runs. Jerrad O'Malley (JR/Yutan, Neb.) recorded two outs in the eighth and Little picked up a strikeout to close out the eighth in his Doane pitching debut.
