[Baseball] Baseball Splits with No. 20 Concordia

Doane Baseball hosted No. 20 Concordia on Friday afternoon in Crete in a battle of the top two teams in the GPAC. Taking the initial lead in each game did not prove advantageous as Concordia rallied for a 9-8 win in game one while Doane rallied in game two to earn a split following a 14-8 victory. Doane is now 18-9-1 overall and 9-1 in the GPAC while Concordia is 21-4 overall and 8-2 in the GPAC. Game OneDoane jumped out to a six run lead, however, the Bulldogs were able to plate eight runs in the 6th inning to snag the win away from the Tigers. Doane struck first in the 3rd inning as they plated four runs on one hit. The Tigers loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks. With two outs, Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) drew a walk to give his team the lead. Aaron Mason (SR/Omaha, Neb.) followed with an infield single, Tucker Catlett (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) walked, and Nate Mensik (FR/Pleasant Dale, Neb.) was hit by a pitch to give Doane a 4-0 lead.In the 4th inning, Joe Osborn (FR/Hickman, Neb.) hit a two-run home run to put Doane up 6-0. Concordia came back with a run in the 5th with Doane scoring one in the bottom of the inning. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.) had a RBI-single to put the Tigers up 7-1.In the 6th, the Bulldogs plated eight runs on six hits, a hit batter, and a walk. A three-run home run put Concordia in front for the first time, 9-7. Doane was able to plate a run in the bottom of the 7th on a ground out by Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.).Travis Cowan (JR/Lakewood, Colo.) started for Doane and went 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and six walks while striking out four. Thaniel Trumper (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) threw 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.Doane was limited to four hits in the game but drew 10 walks and two hit batters. Osborn led the team with two RBIs in the game. Game TwoConcordia was first to score but it was an eventful 7th inning that would prove the difference in the second game as 14 runs crossed the plate, nine from the Tigers.The Bulldogs plated a run in the 1st inning and one in the 4th to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, the Tigers tied the game on a two-run home run by Talon Little (JR/Lincoln, Neb.). Doane took their first lead of the game in the 5th inning on a two-out single by White.In the 7th inning, Concordia scored five runs on three hits, two walks, and two hit batters. Doane responded in kind in the bottom of the inning with nine runs on four hits, five walks, and a hit batter. White plated the first run of the inning with a RBI-single. Theiler came around to score on a wild pitch and Zach Brown (FR/Gillette, Wyo.) scored on a RBI-groundout by Osborn to tie the game. Doane took the lead on a Nakamoto single, and with the bases loaded, Jack Tillman (SO/Omaha, Neb.) drew a walk to plate a run. Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) followed with a three-run triple and Theiler tripled to cap off the inning for a 13-7 advantage. In the 8th inning, Brett Meyer (FR/Seward, Neb.) had a RBI-single to plate Osborn for a 14-7 lead. Concordia scored a run in the 9th inning to close out the scoring.Aaron Forrest (FR/Peoria, Ariz.) started for the Tigers, going 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Jackson Stensgard (SO/Maricopa, Ariz.), Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.), and Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) threw in the 7th inning. Stensgard was charged with three runs in 0.1 of an inning, Vargas was charged with two runs, and Mason collected the final two outs of the frame. Thaniel Trumper threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.Doane had 13 hits in the game, led by White as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three driven in. LaChance was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Little was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Theiler was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while Osborn was 2-for-5 with a run scored and one driven in. Justin Nevells (FR/Chugiak, Alaska) added two runs scored as a courtesy runner.
