[Baseball] BCU Takes Two Low Scoring Baseball Games

Doane Baseball met up with Briar Cliff on Saturday to open a four-game series with the Chargers. Briar Cliff was able to edge out a pair of pitchers duals, taking game one, 3-1, and game two, 2-1. Game OneBriar Cliff turned to their ace, Jacob Wesselmann, who improved to 7-0 on the season by limiting Doane to four hits in the game. Doane's Travis Cowan (JR/Lakewood, Colo.) threw well, limiting the Chargers to five hits, but a two-run home run proved to be the difference in the game.BCU scored the first runs of the game in the 2nd inning. A leadoff walk followed by a one-out home run put the Chargers up 2-0. Briar Cliff added to the lead in the 4th inning with a bases loaded sacrifice fly moving the lead to 3-0.Doane scored their lone run of the game in the 5th inning with a two-out rally. Aaron Mason (SR/Omaha, Neb.) doubled with two outs in the inning. He came around to score as Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) hit a single into left field and the fielder misplayed the ball, allowing Mason to score. Game TwoThe game was scoreless through six innings of play as Dalen Blair of BCU and Aaron Forrest (FR/Peoria, Ariz.) of Doane were both throwing well. Both teams had a base hit in the opening inning but did not leave a runner on base as the defenses turned double plays.Doane had the best chance to score early as they opened the 4th inning with a double and a hit batter to put two on with no outs. However, they were unable to plate a run as the inning ended on a lineout.In the 7th inning, BCU broke the tie as they plated a run on two Doane errors. The Chargers added to their lead as a walk to open the 8th inning came around to score for a 2-0 lead.Doane made a rally in the 9th inning but came up short. Tucker Catlett (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) had a pinch hit double with one out and came around to score on a two-out double by LaChance. A ground out would end the game with the tying run on base.Forrest took the loss, allowing one unearned run in 7.0 innings. He limited the Chargers to three hits and struck out nine batters. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) allowed one run on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning while Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.) allowed a walk and struck out two in 0.2 innings. Jerrod O'Malley threw a scoreless inning, striking out two as the pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts. Blair scattered seven Doane hits in going the distance for Briar Cliff. Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.) and White had two hits apiece for Doane.
