[Baseball] Bees get three wins in four-game series at Benedictine (Kan.)

The St. Ambrose baseball team picked up its first wins of the season over the weekend. The Bees swept a doubleheader from Benedictine (Kan.) on Saturday before a splitting a doubleheader Sunday. The wins move SAU to 3-4 on the year.St. Ambrose 13-6, Benedictine 5-2 – Game 1 boxscore | Game 2 boxscoreColton Carr struck out 10 in leading St. Ambrose to a 6-2 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. He allowed just five hits and one earned run in the complete-game effort. Both Benedictine runs came in the bottom of the first inning, just after Shawn Rigsby's two-out solo home run had given St. Ambrose an early 1-0 lead. The Bees took the lead for good in the second. Max Rumpf and Kyle Schultz had back-to-back one-out singles before Brenden Butler walked to load the bases. Dylan Doyle's infield hit tied the game at 2-2 and Kyel Alexander followed with a single to right to score Schultz for a 3-2 lead. One out later, Rigsby was hit by a pitch to plate Butler to up the lead to 4-2. Rumpf had an RBI double in the third and Rigsby picked up his third RBI of the game on a run-scoring groundout in the fourth to end the scoring. Rumpf finished 3-for-3 while Alexander and Rigsby each had two hits.Carr's gem followed four innings of strong relief work in the opener from James Cormier. Cormier got the win after striking out five in four scoreless innings in relief of Mitch Thompson. Trailing 4-1 after one, the Bees exploded for three runs in the second, five in the fourth and four more in the seventh. Eight different Bees had at least one hit with Rigsby collecting three hits. Rumpf, Butler, Doyle, Mike Coughlin and Cole Aughenbaugh each had a pair of hits. Alexander drove in three runs while Butler and Doyle each scored three runs. Thompson also struck out five in his three innings of work, giving St. Ambrose pitching 10 strikeouts in each game.St. Ambrose 14-6, Benedictine 13-7 – Game 3 boxscore | Game 4 boxscoreSt. Ambrose rallied twice, first from a 3-0 deficit then from an 8-4 score, to defeat Benedictine 14-13 in the first game Sunday. The Bees plated eight runs in the top of the seventh, then held on after the Ravens scored five times in the bottom of the inning. St. Ambrose pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of seven Benedictine errors to score eight unearned runs. Six of those errors came in the seventh inning helping SAU build a 14-8 lead. But the Bees nearly gave it all back. The Ravens pushed across five runs and had the potential tying run at third before Fabian Garcia got a ground out to end the game. Dylan Doyle was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Shawn Rigsby (3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Cole Aughenbaugh (1 RBI, 1 run) each had two hits. Mike Coughlin drove in a pair in the win. Jack Staten got the win in relief of Zach Meyer. Garcia entered in the seventh and struck out two in his inning of work.SAU again rallied twice in the series finale but couldn't sweep the set as Benedictine walked off with a 7-6 win. The Bees overcame 3-0 and 6-3 deficits, ultimately tying the game at 6-6 with a three-run seventh inning. Aughenbaugh took care of the early 3-0 deficit, launching a three-run home run in the fourth to knot the score at 3-3. Then in the seventh, the Bees capitalized on three Raven errors to pull even at 6-6. But in the bottom of the eighth, Benedictine loaded the bases with two outs before a single to right plated the game-winner. Rigsby completed his big series with two more hits. Brenden Butler also had two hits. Nick Hernandez took the loss. Frankie Klemm started and allowed three runs over three innings before giving way to Collin Rogiers, who gave up three runs over four innings.The Bees are scheduled to play a four-game set against Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky., next weekend.
