[Baseball] Bees take tough loss at home against Calumet

The St. Ambrose baseball team suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave (12-27, 7-15 CCAC) Thursday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The Bees were holding on to a two-run lead heading into the penultimate eighth inning, but a three-spot eighth gave the Wave just enough to take down the fighting Bees 7-6.The St. Ambrose offense was slow to start, failing to record their first hit until the fifth inning. Calumet took advantage and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. That fifth inning was huge for the Bees. Max Rumpf broke the hitless drought with a one-out single to get Brenden Butler over to second base. Kyel Alexander then came through with a 2-RBI single to center to tie the game up. Alexander stole second and came around off the bat of Mike Snow to take the lead. Nate Villagomez closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly to put the Bees up two.St. Ambrose would hold the lead until the eighth inning. The Wave jumped the St. Ambrose arms for three runs to take a one-run lead in the seventh. The Bees were threatening in the bottom of the ninth, but a close play at the plate nabbed Tyreece Morgan trying to score off an Alexander single stymied the Bees' chances. The Fighting Bees move to 27-9 overall and 18-5 in the conference following the loss. St. Ambrose will look to get back on track with a doubleheader against Trinity Christian Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday.
