[Baseball] Four Home Runs Aid Baseball Split

Doane Baseball traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Morningside at Bishop Mueller Field, home of Briar Cliff. The Tigers and Mustangs split their doubleheader on Saturday as Morningside won the opener, 12-9, and Doane shut down the host squad in game two, 7-1. Game OneDoane battled back from an early deficit only to see the Mustangs score four runs in the 6th inning to pick up the win. The Tigers were first to score as they pushed a run across in the top of the 1st inning. Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double play turned by Morningside. The Mustangs came back in the bottom of the 1st with four runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batter. They took a 5-1 lead as they executed a double steal with two outs in the inning.Doane cut into the lead in the 4th inning as Tucker Catlett (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) hit a two-run home run. Morningside countered with two runs in the bottom of the 4th as the strung together a walk and three hits following the first two outs being recorded.In the 5th inning, the Tigers again plated two runs. Theiler walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Talon Little (JR/Lincoln, Neb.). A double by Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) brought Little in as the Tigers trailed 7-5. The Mustangs picked up a run in the bottom of the 5th on a leadoff home run.Three runs crossed in the top of the 6th for Doane to tie the game at 8-all. Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a double by Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.). Little then followed with a two-run home run to tie the game. Morningside answered immediately in the bottom of the 6th with four runs on five hits to take a 12-8 lead. Doane's final run was plated in the 7th inning on an RBI-double by Nate Mensik (FR/Pleasant Dale, Neb.).Jordan Wisner (JR/Anaheim Hills, Calif.) drew the start but was unable to record an out before exiting. He was charged with four runs on three hits and two walks. Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.) threw 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one run on one hit and a walk with three strikeouts. White took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 0.1 inning. Little pitched 0.2 innings to close out the 6th inning.Little went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. White was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Catlett drove in two and Theiler scored twice. Game TwoTiger pitching scattered 11 hits while limiting the Mustangs to one run in nine innings and the offense sealed the victory with a four-run outburst in the 7th inning.Doane started the scoring in the 2nd inning as Bob Mercier (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) hit a two-out, solo home run. In the 3rd inning, the Tigers plated two more runs for a 3-0 lead. White had a RBI-single and Little had a sacrifice fly to drive in the runs. Morningside picked up their lone run in the 5th inning, an unearned run.In the 7th inning, Theiler had a RBI-single, White had an RBI-double, and Joe Osborn (FR/Hickman, Neb.) capped the scoring with a two-run home run.Kyler Beekman (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) made the start and threw 7.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on nine hits and a walk while striking out three. McCown threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.White was 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in two runs. Theiler went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Osborn matched White with two RBIs and Tanner Black (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) matched Theiler with two runs scored to lead the team.
