[Baseball] Little Ties Home Run Record; Team Splits DH

Doane Baseball finished off their four-game series with Dakota Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in Crete with the home Tigers running away early in game one for an 18-2 win and the visiting Tigers coming from behind for a 10-6 win in the finale. The split left Doane with a 27-13-1 overall record and 16-3 mark in the GPAC, tied for first place. Game OneDoane's first 11 batters (10 hits, one walk) reached base to open the bottom of the 1st inning as the Tigers would score 11 runs for the early lead. They hit three home runs in the inning as Tucker Catlett (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) hit a two-run home run, followed by a solo home run from Aaron Mason (SR/Omaha, Neb.), and Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.) capped the long blasts with a three-run home run.In the 2nd inning, Doane scored two more runs as Talon Little (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) singled in a run with Theiler scoring on an error. DWU came back with two runs in the 4th, only to see the Tigers get one back in the bottom of the inning. Little hit a home run down the left field line for his 13th of the season.Trey Adams (FR/Arvada, Colo.) drove in a run in the 5th inning on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 15-2. Doane scored three in the 6th inning, two off the bat of Zach Brown (FR/Gillette, Wyo.) who doubled. Catlett then singled to score Brown for the final run of the game.Twelve different players accounted for the team's 21 hits. Catlett was 4-for-5 with a run scored and three driven in. Little was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. Theiler went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in. Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.) and Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) added two hits apiece as well.Jordan Wisner (JR/Anaheim Hills, Calif.) improved to 7-0 on the season as he threw 5.0 innings, striking out 10 batters. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits and two walks. Jerrad O'Malley (JR/Yutan, Neb.) threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Game TwoDakota Wesleyan took an early lead only to see Doane battle back and go in front midway through the game. However, DWU scored six unanswered runs to go back in front and hold on for the lead.DWU scored two runs in the first three innings at the plate for a 2-0 lead. Doane came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a two-run home run by Nate Mensik (FR/Pleasant Dale, Neb.).In the 4th inning, Doane took their first lead of the game as Little hit his 14th home run of the season. The blast tied Little for the single-season record at Doane, matching the mark held by Bill DePolo in 1993.The Tigers added a run in the 4th inning as Joe Osborn (FR/Hickman, Neb.) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by LaChance.The 5th inning saw DWU score twice to tie the game at 4-4, and then Doane regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch as Mensik scored. DWU took the lead for good in the 6th inning as they opened the inning with a single and home run. The visitors added to their lead with four runs in the 8th inning.Nakamoto picked up a run for Doane in the bottom of the 8th on a solo home run.Dakota Wesleyan out-hit the Tigers, 16-8. Kyler Beekman (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) started for Doane, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) threw a scoreless inning in the 5th. Kellan Voggesser (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) was tagged with the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits with a team-high three strikeouts. Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.) allowed four runs in 0.2 innings on four hits. Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) allowed one hit in 0.1 inning. Thaniel Trumper (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) threw a scoreless 9th inning.At the plate, Mason was the only player to have multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Mensik had a team leading two runs and two RBIs in the game.
