[Baseball] Mayville State Takes Decision in 10 Innings from Baseball

Doane Baseball played their first home game on the Crete turf on Sunday as they played their final game of a three-game series with Mayville State. Doane's previous six games on the season were played in Lincoln. The Comets jumped out to an early lead only to see Doane tie the game. Mayville State came away on top, 9-7, as the teams played 10 innings on the day.The Comets scored two runs in the 1st and four in the 2nd for a 6-0 lead. Doane scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a RBI-single by Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii). The Comets were able to get a run back in the 5th only to have Doane score four in the bottom of the inning. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.) had a two-run single, Bob Mercier (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) added a RBI-double, and Joe Osborn (FR/Hickman, Neb.) plated a run on a fielder's choice.Doane tied the game with two runs in the 7th inning. Brett Meyer (FR/Seward, Neb.) hit a double to plate a run while Nakamoto added a RBI-single. Mayville came back with two runs in the 10th for the final scoring.Kellan Voggesser (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) started for the Tigers and allowed six runs (five earned) in 1.0-plus inning. Christian McCown (JR/Diller, Neb.) recorded one out on the mound followed by Julian Vargas (FR/Denver, Colo.) going 3.2 innings, allowing one run. Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) picked up 4.0 scoreless innings and Brady McMurray (SR/Odell, Neb.) threw the final inning, allowing two runs (one earned). Vargas and Mason recorded seven strikeouts apiece.Doane finished with 14 hits on the day, three from White as he drove in two runs. Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.), Mercier, Osborn, and Nakamoto added two hits apiece.Next up on the Tigers' schedule is a home game on Tuesday, March 3, at 2 PM as Peru State comes to town.
