[Baseball] Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short for Baseball

Timely hitting was the difference on Monday afternoon as York defeated Doane, 10-9, in baseball action in Crete. The Tigers clawed their way back but came up 90 feet shy of tying the game in the final inning.York jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the 1st inning. A Doane double play defensively ended the threat. The Panthers added a run in the 3rd inning as a walk came around to score with two outs. In the 5th inning, York pushed seven runs across, all with two outs, to take a 9-0 lead.Doane came back with a six-run 5th inning to fight back into the game. Luke LaChance (FR/Littleton, Colo.) started the scoring with his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast. Lukas White (SO/Castaic, Calif.) had a RBI-single following a triple by Andy Theiler (JR/Arlington, Neb.). Bob Mercier (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) drove in two with a pinch-hit single and a balk scored the final run of the inning.York added a run in the 7th inning as a walk came around to score on a two-out double.The Tigers once again had one last push as they scored three runs in the 9th inning. Talon Little (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) hit a two-run home run to start the scoring with two outs. Joe Osborn (FR/Hickman, Neb.) drew a walk and scored on a RBI-triple by Jaryn Nakamoto (SR/Aiea, Hawaii). Nakamoto was unable to advance home as the game came to a close.Kellan Voggesser (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) started for the Tigers and went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Nathan Stark (JR/Medicine Hat, Alberta) threw 0.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits and a walk. Staley Gilmore (SR/Bellingham, Wash.) pitched 0.1 inning, allowing three unearned runs on two hits and a walk. Hyunjun Chung (SO/Seoul, South Korea) tossed 1.0 inning, allowing one walk. Evan Mason (FR/Aurora, Colo.) finished with 2.0 innings of work, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three. Jerrad O'Malley (JR/Yutan, Neb.) posted a scoreless inning, walking one and allowing a hit with two strikeouts.Doane finished with eight hits offensively, three off the bat of Nakamoto. Little, Mercier, and LaChance tied for team-high honors with two RBIs apiece while Little and Osborn scored two runs apiece.
