[Baseball] Vollmert pitches well; offense doesn't click against Tigers

Riding a spectacular pitching performance from Nick Vollmert, the Fighting Bees were able to hang tough with the CCAC's top team, Olivet Nazarene.Vollmert went six innings without surrendering a run, limiting the Tigers (32-14, 25-2 CCAC) to two hits and striking out five over the opening six frames. On the other side of the ball, the St. Ambrose offense simply couldn't find its groove, being held to just three hits in the contest. The Bees were threatening in the top of the second. Kyel Alexander started a two-out rally after laying down a bunt single, using his speed to reach second on the throw. Mike Snow then drew a walk to keep the momentum rolling. However, a Nate Villagomez groundout halted the Ambrose rally.Olivet Nazarene scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the seventh. The Tiger's lifted a lead-off single to center field and then played some small ball to move the runner around. After surrendering the run on an RBI single, Vollmert was able to induce a double-play to escape the jam realtively unscathed. The St. Ambrose offense would not click in the final two innings. The Bees got two runners on with a pair of walks from Bryce Vincent and Brenden Butler but couldn't do any damage, with the scored holding at 1-0 Tigers. The Bees will hit the road to take on St. Francis (Ill.) in a three-game set this weekend.
